How to measure and fit your treads
Count and measure
Count the steps you want to cover, leaving out landings. Measure the width of your narrowest step, and its flat depth from the back to where the nose begins.
Pick a size
Our treads are flat: they lie on the step and stop short of the nose. Pick one no deeper than the flat part of your step.
Center and fix
Center each tread, ideally with about 2 in (5 cm) of wood on each side. Diamond Tufted needs no tape or adhesive, and self-adhesive treads like Arc Felt peel and press down; test any extra fixing somewhere hidden and check for lifting edges.
Sizes and prices
We suggest 31.5 x 8 in for steps at least 35.4 in wide and 8 in deep, and 31.4 x 7.9 in for steps at least 35.3 in wide and 7.9 in deep. Both leave 2 in or more of wood on each side.

Common questions
Which size do I need?
Measure your narrowest step. A step at least 31.5 in (80 cm) wide takes GripStep or Warm Loop, both about 31.5 x 8 in (80 x 20 cm), one at least 30 in (76 cm) wide takes Diamond Tufted at 30 x 8 in (76 x 20 cm), and Arc Felt fits steps at least 24 in (60 cm) wide. Smaller steps? Send us your measurements first.
How many treads should I order?
One per step you want to cover, not counting landings, so 13 steps means 13 treads. Some treads come singly and others in packs of 3 to 15, so pick packs that add up to your count. Count each flight separately, and add one if you'd like a spare.
Flat tread or bullnose wrap?
Every tread we sell is flat: it sits on the flat part of the step and leaves the front edge in view, also on a rounded bullnose. We don't sell wraps that fold over the nose.
Do they stay put? Are they non-slip?
Diamond Tufted, GripStep and Warm Loop have a non-slip rubber backing, and Diamond Tufted needs no tape or adhesive. Soft Step Leaf and Arc Felt have a self-adhesive backing that you peel and press down. Check every tread for movement or lifting edges after fitting. We don't make a certified slip-resistance claim.
Will they fit turning or open stairs?
Rectangular treads may not fit tapered, curved or open steps. Measure each step on its own and make sure the whole tread is supported. If a step changes shape, send us the sizes before you order.
How do I clean them?
Vacuum gently along the pile and blot spills with a clean cloth and a little mild soap. Diamond Tufted and Arc Felt are machine washable. Avoid soaking the others, let the tread dry fully before refitting, and check the fixing afterwards.
How long does delivery take?
Each product page and the checkout show the estimated delivery time for your country. Pieces may arrive in separate packages.
What if they don't fit?
Check the fit before you fix anything down. Request a return within 30 days of delivery, then send the treads back unused and unmodified within 14 days of approval. You pay the return shipping.
