How to measure for carpet stair treads
Five minutes with a tape measure: count your steps, measure the narrowest one and check the front edge. Then pick a tread from 21.7 to 39.4 in (55 to 100 cm) wide.
1. Count your steps
Count every step you want to cover, from the bottom up, leaving out landings: 13 steps means 13 treads. GripStep and Warm Loop are sold one at a time, Soft Step Leaf singly or in packs of 3 or 5, Arc Felt in packs of 4, 6 or 8 and Diamond Tufted in packs of 4, 8, 12 or 15, so pick packs that add up to your count. Count each flight separately, and add one if you'd like a spare.
2. Measure the narrowest step
Measure the clear width between walls or spindles, then check a second step near the top: older staircases aren't always consistent. Work from the narrowest step.
Then measure the flat depth, from the back of the step to where the nose begins. Don't follow the tape around the nose.
3. Check the front edge
All our treads are flat: they sit on top and stop short of the nose, so the front edge stays in view, square or rounded. We don't sell wraps that fold over the nose; for grip on the edge itself, see our anti-slip stair tape.
Square, irregular, open or turning stairs need a closer look: rectangular treads may not fit tapered, curved or open steps. Send us the sizes before you order.
4. Center and fix
Center each tread, ideally with about 2 in (5 cm) of wood on each side, and keep the whole tread supported. Diamond Tufted holds with its non-slip rubber backing, with no tape or adhesive needed, and GripStep and Warm Loop also have a non-slip backing. Soft Step Leaf and Arc Felt are self-adhesive: peel the backing and press the tread down, set back from the nose. If you add any other fixing, test it somewhere hidden first and check for lifting edges.
Chair leg protectors
Measure the foot where the cap will sit, not higher up the leg. Round legs: measure straight across. Square legs: measure one flat side, not the diagonal.
| Leg | Cap sizes |
|---|---|
| Round | 0.63-0.87, 0.91-1.18 or 1.22-1.57 in (16-22, 23-30 or 31-40 mm) |
| Square | 0.71-0.94, 0.98-1.26 or 1.30-1.57 in (18-24, 25-32 or 33-40 mm) |
For oval, tapered or heavily angled feet, ask us before choosing a standard cap.
Dry fitting your treads
Before securing your treads, wipe down the timber steps to clear away dust, grit, or wax residue. Lay out the treads loose on each step from bottom to top. Check that the bare wood on the left and right is even, ideally about 2 in (5 cm) on each side. This dry test lets you confirm alignment and ensure that every tread sits fully supported across the step surface before using any fixing method.
Selecting the right style
All our flat carpet stair treads leave the front timber nosing in view, and they suit steps with a rounded front edge too: see carpet stair treads for bullnose steps. Arc Felt is a semi-circular tread with a curved front edge.
Remember that rectangular treads may not suit spiral, winder, or open-riser stairs. For turning or irregular steps, measure each step individually and send us the dimensions before placing an order.

Questions
Which size do I need?
Measure your narrowest step. A step at least 31.5 in (80 cm) wide takes GripStep or Warm Loop, both about 31.5 x 8 in (80 x 20 cm), one at least 30 in (76 cm) wide takes Diamond Tufted at 30 x 8 in (76 x 20 cm), and Arc Felt fits steps at least 24 in (60 cm) wide. Smaller steps? Send us your measurements first.
Flat tread or bullnose wrap?
Every tread we sell is flat: it sits on the flat part of the step and leaves the front edge in view, also on a rounded bullnose. We don't sell wraps that fold over the nose.
Will they fit turning or open stairs?
Rectangular treads may not fit tapered, curved or open steps. Measure each step on its own and make sure the whole tread is supported. If a step changes shape, send us the sizes before you order.
Which chair cap shape do I need?
Match round caps to round legs and square caps to square legs. Measure at the bottom where the sleeve sits, not higher up the leg. For angled, oval or tapered feet, send us the measurements rather than forcing a standard cap.
