How to choose a rug pad or tape

Start with the job you need done. A rug pad adds cushion and grip under a full rug. Carpet tape holds edges, corners and runners in place. If your rug slides on wood, tile or laminate, tape along the edges is often enough. If the whole rug creeps, a pad plus tape at the corners works well.

Think about traffic. Hall runners and entry rugs take more movement than a rug under a coffee table. For those spots, a wider tape gives more hold. For a small accent rug, a narrow tape is easier to hide.

Check your floor type. Both tapes here are made for indoor use on carpets, rugs and household surfaces. Clean the floor and the rug backing before you apply. Dust and grit stop tape from sticking.

Sizes and measuring

Tape width matters more than length for most jobs. The Grid Lock Double Sided Rug Tape comes in five widths: 0.4 in (1 cm), 0.8 in (2 cm), 1.2 in (3 cm), 1.6 in (4 cm) and 2 in (5 cm).

Use 0.4 in (1 cm) or 0.8 in (2 cm) for light rugs and corners. Use 1.2 in (3 cm) or 1.6 in (4 cm) for runners and everyday rugs. Use 2 in (5 cm) for large rugs, heavy carpets and busy doorways.

Measure the rug first. For edge tape, you need enough to run along the sides you want to secure. A common plan is tape at all four corners, plus a strip along each long edge for a runner. For a full rug, tape under the corners and a few spots along the edges.

Measure the floor space too. Tape should sit flat, with no folds or bumps. Cut pieces to fit before you peel the backing.

Materials and what they do

Gripweave Double Sided Carpet Tape is a translucent mesh cloth tape with adhesive on both sides. The mesh cloth gives it strength and lets it flex with the rug. It is made for carpets, rugs and household surfaces indoors. The translucent color helps it blend in on light floors and under thin rugs.

Grid Lock Double Sided Rug Tape is a transparent mesh filament tape with adhesive on both sides. It has a yellow release liner over clear tape and a grid mesh surface that is waterproof. It is made for carpet, rug and slip resistant fixing. The grid mesh adds grip and helps the tape hold on smooth floors.

Both are double sided, so one side grips the floor and the other grips the rug. Neither adds much height, which keeps rug edges low and safe to walk on.

Care and application

Prep is the biggest step. Wipe the surface clean before applying. Let it dry fully. Dust, hair and grease are the main reasons tape fails.

Peel the release liner and press the tape down on the floor. Press firmly along the whole strip. Then press the rug onto the tape and press again. Firm pressure helps the adhesive bond.

For the Grid Lock tape, the yellow liner shows which side to peel. Work in short sections so the tape does not stick to itself.

When you move a rug, lift it slowly. If tape stays on the floor, peel it up and wipe away any residue. Replace tape when it stops holding. A fresh strip is usually all you need.

Keep tape away from wet areas and direct heat. For outdoor use, choose a product made for outdoors.

Matching tape to the room

Entryways and mudrooms: use 1.6 in (4 cm) or 2 in (5 cm) tape. These spots see the most foot traffic and the most rug movement.

Hallways and runners: use 1.2 in (3 cm) or 1.6 in (4 cm) tape along the long edges and corners. Runners slide side to side more than they slide forward.

Living rooms and bedrooms: use 0.8 in (2 cm) or 1.2 in (3 cm) tape at the corners. If the rug is large, add a strip at the middle of each long edge.

Bathrooms and kitchens: use 0.4 in (1 cm) or 0.8 in (2 cm) tape for small mats. Make sure the floor is dry before you apply.

Stairs: tape works on treads and landings. Press firmly and check the edges often.

If you are not sure, buy one width up from what you think you need. Wider tape is easier to press down and holds better on smooth floors.

Questions

What is the best rug pad for hardwood floors?

For wood, tile and laminate, use double sided tape along the edges and corners. It grips the floor and the rug without adding bulk. Clean the floor first, then press firmly.

How do I stop a rug from sliding on carpet?

Use a double sided tape made for carpet and rug fixing. Press it between the rug and the carpet. Wider tape, such as 1.6 in (4 cm) or 2 in (5 cm), holds better in busy rooms.

What width rug tape should I buy?

Use 0.4 in (1 cm) or 0.8 in (2 cm) for small mats and corners. Use 1.2 in (3 cm) or 1.6 in (4 cm) for runners and everyday rugs. Use 2 in (5 cm) for large rugs and doorways.

How do I apply double sided rug tape?

Wipe the surface clean and let it dry. Peel the release liner, press the tape to the floor, then press the rug onto the tape. Press firmly along the whole strip for a strong hold.

Can I use rug tape on stairs?

Yes. Tape works on stair treads and landings. Press firmly and check the edges often. Replace tape when it stops holding.
